Here’s what’s new at UnRestrict Minnesota:
SCOTUS Chat: Mifepristone
On June 13, 2024, the Supreme Court issued a decision in U.S. Food and Drug Administration v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, its first abortion case since the Dobbs ruling reversing Roe v. Wade.
In a unanimous ruling the U.S. Supreme Court maintained the current FDA regulations on mifepristone, one of the two pills used in medication abortion. However, while this ruling maintains the status quo for mifepristone access, it contains troubling language suggesting that doctors with religious objections to any medical treatment could potentially opt out, even if it could result in death or severe harm to a patient.

Pro-Choice Minnesota: Dunk on Dobbs
On June 24, 2022 the landmark Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court decision sent shockwaves through the reproductive justice movement when Roe v. Wade was overturned, stripping away the legal right to an abortion for millions of Americans. It’s more important now than ever before to build community and fight against these restrictive bans. That’s why Pro-Choice Minnesota is gathering reproductive freedom activists and allies at A Bar of Their Own, the Twin Cities’ first sports bar dedicated to broadcasting and highlighting women’s sports, for a night of resistance while celebrating the progress we have made here in Minnesota to protect reproductive freedom.
Film Screening: “Under G-d”
NCJW and the Courts Matter Coalition will host a screening of “Under G-d”, a documentary film about the national Jewish response to the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Jess Braverman, Legal Director at Gender Justice, will join the event to speak about her abortion litigation work with pro-abortion religious groups!
Next With SCOTUS: Looking Towards EMTALA
A SCOTUS decision in the case Idaho v. United States and Moyle et al., or the “EMTALA” (Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act) case is right around the corner. The case centers on whether or not state abortion bans supersede the federal law mandating that hospital emergency departments receiving federal funding must stabilize a patient whose life or health is at risk. The decision could massively impact emergency medical care for pregnant people nationwide, and once the ruling is made, Gender Justice will help you unpack it by hosting another SCOTUS chat covering the details.
