Minnesota is on the front lines in the fight for abortion access today.
According to the Star Tribune, more than 16% of the 12,175 abortions in Minnesota last year involved women from other states.
And the number of abortions in Minnesota increased 20% from 2021 to 2022, the year that Roe fell.
Shayla Walker, Executive Director of UnRestrict Minnesota partner Our Justice, told our local CBS affiliate she was surprised the year-over-year increase in abortions wasn’t higher.
“We in the movement were anticipating that it was going to be much higher,” Walker said. “What that speaks to is people—even though there are a lot of people who can travel, those are people folks who have privileges.”

Woman Sues Anti-Abortion “Pregnancy Center” in Massachusetts
Minnesota’s “crisis pregnancy centers” outnumber abortion clinics by 10 to 1. They are unregulated, unlicensed, and unethical. And in many cases, dangerous.
A Massachusetts woman is suing an anti-abortion crisis pregnancy center that failed to diagnose her ectopic pregnancy. As a result, she lost a fallopian tube during emergency surgery. None of this should have been necessary, as legitimate medical providers would have ended her life-threatening pregnancy with medication.
Pregnant people deserve better resources and, as part of our Minnesota Beyond Roe agenda, we are working to expand access to real reproductive health care.
Fractured: Stories from a Post-Roe America Featuring UnRestrict Minnesota
Six (State Innovation Exchange) recently released “Fractured,” a documentary series that follows state legislators from across the country as they fight to defend abortion rights and expand access for all Americans after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
Episode one features scenes from UnRestrict Minnesota’s 2023 Reproductive Freedom Lobby Day and included interviews with Senator Erin Maye Quade.
Iowa Abortion Ban Update
We have been closely following the state of abortion access in neighboring Iowa.
An Iowa state district court has temporarily blocked the six-week abortion ban that was passed last week. Abortion in Iowa remains legal — for now.
