2024 legislative wins and more news

The 2024 legislative session in Minnesota has come to a close. Here’s what happened, plus more UnRestrict news and updates!
Abortion Coverage Act Passes!
In a huge win for reproductive freedom in this year’s Minnesota legislative session, the Abortion Coverage Act – requiring private insurance plans to cover abortion care – passed the Legislature! This would not have been possible without your help, so please join us in celebrating this major victory!
Other Legislative Wins
In addition to the Abortion Coverage Act, there were other major reproductive health, rights, and justice wins we’re excited to celebrate:
- Requiring that public and private health insurance plans in Minnesota cover gender-affirming care
- African American Family Preservation Act
- Funding for an American Indian-focused Birth Center and post-partum services for African American families
- Creating clear and consistent pathways to parental rights for families using assisted reproductive technology and ending the need for second-parent adoption
- Moving the state toward health education standards for public schools
ERA and the Path Forward for Remaining Work
Although we had the votes to pass the MN Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) this year, opponents brazenly delayed the ERA through filibusters, impudent chants and screaming, and other legislative maneuvers until it was too late for the Senate to take it up — preventing it from appearing on a statewide ballot in 2026.
There is more work to do in 2025 to pass the ERA, as well as IVF coverage, over-the-counter birth control coverage, and stabilization funding for abortion clinics.

Join Pro-Choice Minnesota on May 25 at 10:00 a.m. for a Volunteer Clinic Escort training session. Gain the skills and knowledge to provide safe and welcoming support for individuals accessing reproductive healthcare services at the two independent clinics in the metro area. Whether you’re new or experienced, this training equips you to navigate challenges and stand up for patient safety.
